Covered Californiajogger

In California, most people are required by law to have health insurance or pay a tax penalty. If you or your loved ones get sick or hurt, health coverage will make it easier to get the medical care you need and give you peace of mind. Covered California provides medical, dental, and vision coverage for individuals and families who live in California. You may even be able to get help paying for it.

United Way of Northern California can help you compare health care plans to find one that meets your needs, learn about Covered California benefits and check your eligibility, apply for health insurance and subsidies to make your plan more affordable, and fill out applications with our Covered California certified enrollment counselor. For more information, call 530-241-7521 or email

California has a high percentage of households with no bank account (over 7% statewide) or who use some fringe financial services (20%). These families often struggle to build savings, credit or an emergency fund. They also lose money on fees for services like check cashing and money orders.

Through Bank On, local individuals can open a bank account with our partner financial institutions. This helps them build savings, get access to credit, and ensure their money is safe and insured. Classes are currently underway with partnerships involving three financial institutions and five community organizations. To learn more, contact Theresa McCausland at (530) 241-7521 x 101 or

CalSavers gives California employees access to a state-run retirement savings program. It allows private sector employees to easily save for retirement even if they don’t currently have a way to save through work. Through this program, about 7 million workers in California have the opportunity to open an Individual Retirement Account through their job. By 2022, California employers with five or more employees will offer an employer-sponsored retirement plan or participate in CalSavers.

United Way of Northern California can help you learn about your investment options and start an account through CalSavers. To learn more, contact Theresa McCausland at (530) 241-7521 x 101 or Or, check out this short video on our YouTube Channel.

VITA- Free Tax Prep

The VITA program offers FREE tax preparation and e-filing to individuals and families who make less than $66,000 a year, as well as senior citizens, people with disabilities and those who don’t speak English well. It is administered with the help of volunteers who are trained and certified according to IRS standards. This free service saves taxpayers the expense of tax preparation services, which average $300, and puts earnings back in the pockets of low- to moderate-income workers in the form of tax refunds and tax credits, such as Cal EITC.

For those who exceed the income limitation of $66,000, our free online service is available with no limitations. Go to to utilize this free online service.

VITA is brought to you by United Way of Northern California with support from the Redding Bank of Commerce. To learn more about this service or to inquire about volunteering as a tax preparer, call 530-241-7521 or email Theresa McCausland at
