FINANCE

DO YOUR TAXES FOR FREE

MyFreeTaxes.org is operated by United Ways of California, on behalf of and in partnership with our local United Way members. Californian residents can use this tool for free tax filing.

VITA- FREE TAX PREPARATIONmoney

The VITA program offers FREE tax preparation and e-filing to individuals and families who make less than $60,000 a year. It is administered with the help of volunteers who are trained and certified according to IRS standards. This free service saves taxpayers the expense of tax preparation services, which average $300, and puts earnings back in the pockets of low- to moderate-income workers in the form of tax refunds and tax credits, such as Cal EITC.

During the 2021 tax season, United Way of Northern California’s staff were able to complete 431 returns between the Redding and Susanville offices and is estimated money saved by clients of $129,300.

If you are interested in helping out where your community needs it most, fill out an application here to volunteer with UWNC's VITA program today, to help low-to-moderate-income families increase their financial stability.

BankOn

California has a high percentage of households with no bank account (over 7% statewide) or who use some fringe financial services (20%). These families often struggle to build savings, credit, or an emergency fund. They also lose money on fees for services like check cashing and money orders.

Through Bank On, local individuals can open a bank account with our partner financial institutions. This helps them build savings, get access to credit, and ensure their money is safe and insured.
